What is a Home Energy Audit?

A home energy audit is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. A My Home Online home energy assessment will show you problems that may, when corrected, save you significant amounts of money over time and increase comfort in your home.

Discover Your Home’s Energy Efficiency Potential

In Vancouver, 55% of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from buildings. Of this 55%, detached homes account for 31% of all GHG emissions from buildings.

Through the Greenest City Action Plan, My Home Online is aiming to reduce emissions from existing buildings by 20% by 2020. This would eliminate 160,000 tonnes of GHGs per year – the equivalent of removing 40,000 cars from the road.

31% of Emissions Come from Detached Homes.

Is your home contributing to the problem?

Our Home Energy Audits help homeowners identify energy loss in single family homes and commercial buildings. Each Home Energy Audit report additionally highlights information on energy saving incentives that are available to you.

High Heat Loss

Moderate Heat Loss

Reaching Vancouver’s Greenest City Action Plan (GCAP) Targets

A University of Calgary study found that heat loss from the nearly 38,000 thermally imaged homes cost homeowners $4.9 million a year and emitted 29,000 tonnes of C02. The Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning (CALP) at the University of British Columbia prepared a report that identifies best practices, communication and engagement with homeowners on large-scale thermal imaging. Home Energy Audit Process

My Home Online uses only qualified technicians for home energy audits. Homeowners will also be provided information on incentives offered by companies like BC Hydro and Fortis to encourage them to retrofit their home and potentially save hundreds of dollars annually in heating bills.

The energy auditor will do a room-by-room examination of the residence, as well as a thorough examination of past utility bills. Thermal imaging must be done at a time when there is enough temperature variance to show deficiencies. For example, Spring, Fall or Winter seasons provide the most detailed reports.

Reduce Your Energy Costs

My Home Online energy auditors use thermography as a tool to help detect heat losses and air leakage in building envelopes. Many people don’t realize that even new houses can have defects in their thermal envelopes! Find out how energy efficient your home is by booking a My Home Online Home Energy Audit today!

Key Benefits of Home Energy Audits

Thermal imaging cameras are well-established as valuable inspection tools that help reveal missing insulation, HVAC air flow and equipment issues, radiant heating malfunctions, compromised roofing and much more. By detecting and locating patterns and sources of heat loss that are invisible to the naked eye, thermal images provide convincing evidence in reports where improvements need to be made and how well they’ve been completed.

Home Energy Report

It takes a lot of energy to heat, cool and operate a home. Most home buyers have no idea how much it will cost them to operate their home once they move in and most homeowners do not fully understand how much energy their home requires. This results in money being wasted. At My Home Online we’ve found that even home buyers or homeowners that do understand often don’t know what to do about it.

The Home Energy Audit Report will give the home buyer a quick understanding of:

– How much the home will cost to operate (once they move in)

– Where energy (and, therefore, money) is being wasted in the home

– What can be done to save energy and increase comfort after they move in

To conduct a Home Energy Inspection, My Home Online will collect over 40 data points related to energy. We will then use an advanced energy calculator developed by the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors to:

– Estimate the home’s yearly energy usage

– Pinpoint potential energy inefficiencies

– Develop recommendations for energy improvements

– Determine your potential energy savings
